E-commerce has quietly turned into a packaging business. Every parcel that leaves a warehouse carries two costs: what you paid for the packaging itself, and what it costs to move that package to the customer. Chinese poly mailers attack both at the same time, which is why they have become the default shipping format for apparel, accessories and other soft goods sold online worldwide.
Unit cost at genuine scale
China produces flexible polyethylene packaging at a volume no other region can match, and the cost advantage is structural rather than temporary. Raw material supply, film extrusion, printing, cutting and sealing all sit inside the same industrial clusters, so a buyer receives a finished, branded mailer at a fraction of what domestic production costs in Europe or North America. The wider market reflects that pull: the global mailer packaging market was valued at USD 33.83 billion in 2024 and is expected to reach USD 53.82 billion by 2030, growing at roughly 8.2% a year.
Lower shipping cost, not just lower purchase price
Poly mailers weigh almost nothing and, crucially, they do not create dimensional weight. A hoodie packed flat in a 12 x 15 inch mailer can bill on actual weight, around 2 pounds, while the same hoodie in a box can bill at 4 billable pounds or more. Industry comparisons put the saving from moving a soft-goods order from a box to a mailer at roughly 20% to 40% per shipment. For a store shipping thousands of orders a month, that postage saving frequently exceeds what it spends on packaging.
Waterproof, tear-resistant protection
Polyethylene gives a sealed, waterproof and dustproof barrier, so rain, humidity and rough handling do not reach the contents. Quality LDPE mailers are tear-resistant and self-adhesive, with a strong tamper-evident seal that holds through automated sorting lines and last-mile delivery. Unlike a paper envelope, a poly mailer does not lose strength when it gets wet.
A printable branding surface
Chinese factories offer full-bleed, double-sided printing with scratch-, wear- and fade-resistant inks, so one mailer can carry a logo, a seasonal campaign or a marketplace requirement without adding a separate label. Production is flexible too: low minimum order quantities and fast sampling are standard, which means a small brand can order a properly branded run instead of settling for plain bags.
Compliance and export readiness
Suppliers in China increasingly ship recycled and recyclable LDPE grades and hold the certifications buyers ask for, including REACH and RoHS for European markets and the standards required by major marketplaces. Combined with mature freight forwarding and export documentation, a 5,000-unit custom order from overseas has become a routine purchase rather than a project.
The honest limit
Poly mailers are soft by design. Anything fragile, crushable or rigid still needs a box, and forcing mailers onto the wrong product costs more in damaged returns than it saves in postage.
Why the advantage holds
For soft goods, the arithmetic is hard to argue with: lower unit cost, lower postage, faster packing, and a printable surface that turns the parcel itself into marketing. Chinese poly mailers win because they improve three cost lines at once, and that is why they keep carrying the parcel.
